The Asteroid Minders
In a dark corner of space, far from Earth, a small ship named Twilight Echo floated near a giant asteroid. It was just another day for the crew of asteroid miners. They had been working for weeks, breaking rocks and collecting rare metals.
Inside the ship, Captain Lena sat at the control panel, her short brown hair messy under her helmet.
"Anything good today?" she asked, turning to her engineer, Esnyr.
Esnyr wiped sweat from his face. "Mostly iron. A little bit of silver. Same old boring stuff."
"Better than nothing," said Reya, their young geologist, tapping on her screen. "But there’s something strange in Sector 7B. My scanner shows... a metal that isn’t from Earth."
Captain Lena raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure?"
"Totally," Reya nodded. "It’s deep inside the asteroid. It's glowing."
"Glowing?" Esnyr leaned over to see her screen. "That’s not normal."
Lena stood up. "Alright. Let’s check it out."
The crew suited up and climbed into the small mining pod. As they drilled into the asteroid, a strange blue light began to shine through the cracks.
"Whoa," Esnyr whispered. "That’s beautiful."
When the drill broke through, they found a smooth black wall hidden deep inside the rock. Strange symbols glowed across its surface.
"What is this place?" Reya whispered.
Lena touched the wall. It was warm.
Suddenly, a loud hum filled the pod. The wall opened like a door.
Inside, a large room with floating lights and machines stood silent. In the center, a silver orb floated, spinning slowly. It pulsed with energy.
Reya stepped forward. "This is alien. No doubt."
Lena’s voice was quiet. "And very old."
Esnyr looked around. "Should we touch it?"
"No," Lena said. "We call Earth. This is big."
They returned to the ship. Lena sent a message to Earth Command. While waiting, the crew took turns watching the strange room through the cameras.
That night, Esnyr couldn’t sleep. He kept staring at the orb on the screen.
"I just want to touch it once," he whispered to himself.
He sneaked into the pod and entered the alien room. The orb floated calmly. Esnyr reached out and placed his hand on it.
A flash of light filled the room.
His eyes went wide as thousands of images filled his mind—cities burning, stars exploding, planets vanishing, and then Earth… safe and shining.
The light faded. Esnyr fell to his knees.
Lena found him hours later. "What did you do?"
"I saw things," he said, shaking. "That orb… it’s a weapon. A powerful one. It can protect Earth... or destroy it."
Reya gasped. "Are you serious?"
Esnyr nodded. "It showed me everything. It's waiting for a command."
Back on the ship, the crew argued.
"We can’t bring it to Earth!" Reya shouted. "What if it falls into the wrong hands?"
"But what if Earth needs it?" Esnyr said. "You saw the news before we left. War is coming. Countries are fighting for space."
Lena stood still, thinking. "We need to make a choice. Hide it, use it, or destroy it."
Hours later, Earth Command finally replied.
TRANSMISSION: Bring the object to the Lunar Base immediately. Do not open. Do not engage.
Lena frowned. "They want it."
Reya crossed her arms. "Of course they do. It's a weapon."
Esnyr shook his head. "No. It’s more than a weapon. It chooses who controls it. I think it chose me."
"That’s crazy," Reya said.
"Is it?" he replied. "Then why did it show me all those visions?"
Silence filled the room.
Suddenly, alarms blared.
"Pirate ship detected!" shouted the computer.
A dark ship appeared on the radar. It had no flag, no name—only a signal jam.
"How did they find us?" Lena asked.
"They must’ve picked up our message," Esnyr said.
The pirate ship fired. The Twilight Echo shook.
"Shields down to 60%," Reya cried.
"They want the orb!" Lena shouted. "We can’t let them take it!"
"We need to hide it again!" Reya said.
"No," Esnyr stood up. "I’ll use it."
"You’re not serious—" Lena started.
"I am," he said.
Esnyr ran back into the pod and entered the alien room. The orb floated before him.
“I want to protect my crew,” he whispered. “I want to protect Earth.”
The orb glowed brightly. A beam of light shot from it, piercing the pirate ship.
The enemy ship stopped moving. Then, slowly, it vanished into dust.
Reya stared at the screen. "What did he do?"
Lena’s mouth was open. "He saved us."
Esnyr returned, pale but calm. "It listened."
"You’re okay?" Reya asked.
He nodded. "But it’s dangerous. I felt it. If I had wanted to destroy, it would have destroyed Earth itself."
Lena looked serious. "Then we can’t let anyone have it. Not even Earth Command."
Reya whispered, "So what now?"
They all looked at each other.
Esnyr spoke first. "We send a message. Tell them the asteroid collapsed. The object is gone."
"And we hide it somewhere deep," Lena added. "Where no one can find it. Not even us."
Reya smiled sadly. "That’s the only way."
The crew returned to the asteroid. Together, they closed the alien room, sealed the wall, and collapsed the tunnel behind them.
Later, from their ship, they watched the asteroid drift slowly into space, carrying the secret forever.
Esnyr sat alone, staring out the window.
Lena walked in. "Do you still feel it?"
He nodded. "Yes. Like it’s still calling to me."
"Will you be okay?"
Esnyr looked at her and smiled a little. "As long as it stays hidden, I will be."
Reya joined them. "Maybe one day, Earth will be ready."
"Maybe," Lena said softly. "But not today."
The Twilight Echo turned and flew away, leaving the weapon—and its mystery—behind.
Somewhere in the dark, the orb waited again.
