Description
"After the Dance" is a short story by Lev Tolstoy that draws a sharp contrast between hypocritical appeal in the festivity of society and the brutal realities underlying life. The story tells of Ivan Vasilievich remembering one evening when he had attended a ball and danced there with Varinka, the daughter of a military officer. The dance is all so full of joy, beauty, and romance that he stands there amazed and beguiled, smitten by Varinka. The next morning Ivan witnesses a brutal punishment carried out by soldiers under the command of Varinka's father: a soldier is mercilessly flogged. But this event shatters all his romantic illusions and presents in bold relief the deep moral contradiction between last night's charm and the cruelty of today's daylight reality. Tolstoy gives this story as a critique of the moral contradictions of society, how moments of beauty are indeed overshadowed by the brutality that underlies social order and power.
