Description
In A History of Western Philosophy, Bertrand Russell reviews the course which thought has undergone in the West from ancient Greece down through the early 20th century. Russell does a commendable job of setting forth the succession of ideas to be seen in figures such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, on through medieval thinkers like Aquinas to modern philosophers such as Descartes, Kant, and Nietzsche. The book chronicles how philosophy has evolved in response to changes in science, politics, and religion, while supplying, in the process, Russell's own critical estimation of each philosopher's contribution. History and philosophy are here combined with Russell's biting wit to produce a work still seminal to any understanding of how the intellectual tradition of the West has unfolded.
