Description
The nervous system is a network of specialized cells that transmit signals between different parts of the body. It consists of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (nerves outside the CNS). Neurons, the basic units of the nervous system, communicate through electrical and chemical signals. The brain processes information, controls voluntary and involuntary functions, and regulates emotions and behavior. The spinal cord serves as a conduit for nerve signals between the brain and body. Sensory pathways transmit information to the CNS, while motor pathways convey instructions from the CNS to muscles and glands. Overall, the nervous system coordinates bodily functions, responds to stimuli, and maintains homeostasis.
