Description
The Prisoner of the Caucasus is a novella by Leo Tolstoy, telling about two Russian soldiers who fell into the clutches of a group of Tatar tribesmen during their service in the Caucasus: Zhilin and Kostylin. Kept for ransom in some faraway mountain village, the two men face different challenges and responses to their captivity. Zhilin is resourceful and resilient, with a tentative bond to a local Tatar girl, Dina, who brings him food and assists in secretly plotting an escape. Kostylin is dejected and fearful, drawing heavily on the courage of Zhilin. Their fates will make both of them struggle to attain the aspects of human endurance, cultural differences, and complexities of kindness and hostility in a world defined by conflict. By this story, Tolstoy tells of the futility of war, of a possible understanding of the enemy, and the shared humanity transcending cultural boundaries.
