It is a work of historical fiction set during World War II and tells the story of two main characters whose lives intersect amidst the chaos of the war. The first character is Marie-Laure LeBlanc, a blind French girl who flees Paris with her father, a locksmith at the Museum of Natural History, to escape the Nazi occupation. They seek refuge in the walled city of Saint-Malo. The second character is Werner Pfennig, a German orphan with an exceptional talent for fixing radios. He becomes entangled in the Nazi regime and is sent to the Eastern Front as part of a special military unit tasked with tracking down resistance radio broadcasts. As the war unfolds, their paths eventually cross in Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure's father has hidden a valuable diamond, and Werner's unit is searching for resistance broadcasts. Despite the circumstances, their meeting leads to unexpected connections and acts of courage in the face of adversity. The novel weaves together themes of survival, morality, and the power of human connection amid the darkness of war. It received critical acclaim and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2015.
