Description
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! - Volume 1 is the first light novel in the Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! series, written by Torako and illustrated by Nozomi Ōsaka, published under Kyoto Animation's KA Esuma Bunko imprint. The story revolves around Yūta Togashi, a high school student who once suffered from "Chuunibyou"—a phase where adolescents convince themselves they have supernatural powers and act accordingly. During middle school, Yūta called himself the "Dark Flame Master", fully immersing himself in his delusions of grandeur. However, as he matured, he realized how embarrassing his past actions were, leading him to make a firm decision to leave that part of his life behind upon entering high school. Determined to live a completely normal life, he enrolls in a new school where no one knows about his past, hoping for a fresh start. Unfortunately for Yūta, his carefully crafted normal life is shattered when he meets Rikka Takanashi, a quirky and eccentric girl who is still deeply immersed in her own Chuunibyou fantasies. Rikka, who wears an eye patch over her right eye and claims to possess the "Wicked Eye," quickly becomes obsessed with Yūta, declaring that they share a supernatural connection and that he must help her uncover the "Ethereal Horizon." Despite his efforts to distance himself from his past, Yūta finds himself unwillingly drawn into Rikka's world, where he is forced to confront his own lingering embarrassment over his Chuunibyou days. As he spends more time with Rikka, he begins to realize that her delusions are not merely a game but a way for her to cope with her personal struggles, particularly regarding her family situation and her reluctance to face reality. Through their interactions, Yūta and Rikka form a unique bond, with their relationship evolving from mere annoyance to genuine care and understanding. Along the way, they are joined by other colorful characters, including Shinka Nibutani, a popular girl with her own Chuunibyou past, Kumin Tsuyuri, a carefree upperclassman who enjoys sleeping, and Sanae Dekomori, Rikka’s devoted "servant" who shares her delusional fantasies. The novel expertly blends humor, romance, and emotional depth, capturing the struggles of adolescence, self-identity, and the journey toward self-acceptance. Through Yūta’s reluctant but growing involvement in Rikka’s fantasy world, Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! explores the themes of nostalgia, the difficulty of letting go of one's past, and the importance of embracing who you truly are. The novel’s success led to the critically acclaimed anime adaptation by Kyoto Animation, which further expanded the story and introduced additional character development.
