Description
A poor woodman was cutting trees near a river when his axe accidentally fell into the water. He was deeply saddened as it was his only tool for earning a living. Seeing his sorrow, the god Mercury appeared and offered to help. Mercury dived into the river and first brought up a golden axe, asking if it belonged to the woodman. The woodman honestly refused, saying it was not his. Mercury then pulled out a silver axe, but again, the woodman rejected it. Finally, Mercury retrieved the woodman’s old iron axe, and the woodman joyfully claimed it. Impressed by his honesty, Mercury rewarded him with all three axes—the gold, the silver, and his original iron axe. However, when a greedy woodman heard about this and tried to trick Mercury by pretending to lose his axe, Mercury did not help him at all. Moral of the Story: ✅ Honesty is always rewarded. ✅ Greed leads to loss and disappointment. ✅ Integrity is more valuable than wealth. This classic Aesop’s fable teaches the importance of truthfulness and the consequences of dishonesty.
