Midnight Wishes
In a small, bustling city, where lights danced on every street corner, Rebecca stood alone in the town square. It was New Year’s Eve, and the air was cold, crisp, and filled with excitement. She pulled her scarf tighter, her breath forming little clouds as she looked up at the giant clock above.
“Five minutes to midnight,” she whispered, her eyes shining with hope. “Just one wish this year... to find someone who sees me.”
Across the square, Jimmy leaned against a lamppost, hands buried deep in his coat pockets. He watched the crowd, their laughter echoing around him, but he felt alone.
He sighed, his gaze drifting to the clock. “Five minutes to midnight,” he murmured. “Just one wish... to find someone who understands me.”
As the seconds ticked by, the crowd gathered, counting down. Rebecca squeezed her eyes shut. “I wish to find love... real love.”
Jimmy closed his eyes. “I wish to find someone meant for me.”
“Three... two... one... Happy New Year!” The crowd erupted with cheers, fireworks bursting in the sky, painting it with colors. Rebecca opened her eyes, her heart pounding. She looked around, and that’s when she saw him.
Jimmy’s gaze locked with hers across the sea of people. His heart skipped a beat. There was something familiar about her, something that pulled him in. Without thinking, he walked toward her.
Rebecca’s feet moved on their own, closing the distance between them. When they stood face to face, she found herself smiling. “Hi.”
“Hi,” Jimmy replied, his voice warm. “Happy New Year.”
“Happy New Year,” she echoed, her cheeks turning pink. “I’m Rebecca.”
“Jimmy,” he said, his eyes never leaving hers. “I feel like... I know you.”
Rebecca’s heart fluttered. “Me too. That’s strange, isn’t it?”
“Maybe not,” Jimmy said softly. “Maybe it’s meant to be.”
They stood there, fireworks sparkling above them, the world around them fading. They talked for hours, sharing stories and laughter. It was like they had known each other forever.
As the night grew colder, Jimmy looked at her and asked, “Would you like some hot chocolate? There’s a café around the corner.”
Rebecca’s eyes brightened. “I’d love that.”
They walked together, shoulders brushing, their breaths visible in the chilly air. Inside the warm café, they found a cozy corner and ordered two steaming mugs of hot chocolate.
“So,” Jimmy leaned in, his elbows on the table, “did you make a wish at midnight?”
Rebecca’s eyes sparkled. “I did. But... it feels silly now.”
“Tell me,” he urged. “I promise I won’t laugh.”
She looked down, her fingers tracing the rim of her cup. “I wished to find someone who sees me... someone who understands me.”
Jimmy’s heart raced. “That’s not silly,” he said gently. “I wished for the same thing.”
Rebecca’s head shot up, her eyes wide. “You did?”
He nodded. “I think... our wishes led us to each other.”
For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then, Rebecca smiled, her heart full. “I think you’re right.”
They spent the rest of the night talking, laughing, and sharing dreams. Time flew by, and before they knew it, the café was closing.
Jimmy walked Rebecca home, his hands tucked in his pockets to keep warm. As they reached her door, he hesitated. “Can I see you again?”
Rebecca’s cheeks flushed. “I’d like that.” She took out her phone. “Let me give you my number.”
They exchanged numbers, their fingers brushing, sending sparks through them. Jimmy looked at her, his eyes soft. “I feel like... I’ve known you my whole life.”
Rebecca’s heart fluttered. “I feel the same. It’s like... fate.”
Jimmy smiled. “Then let’s not fight it.”
They stood there, silence wrapping around them, both unwilling to say goodbye. Finally, Rebecca took a deep breath. “Goodnight, Jimmy.”
“Goodnight, Rebecca.” He watched her walk inside before turning away, his heart light.
Days turned into weeks, and Rebecca and Jimmy were inseparable. They explored the city together, shared their favorite foods, and laughed until their sides hurt. They discovered new places and made new memories.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of pink and gold, they stood by the river, watching the water ripple.
Rebecca hugged herself against the cold. “This is my favorite spot.”
Jimmy looked at her, his gaze tender. “Mine too... now that I’m here with you.”
She turned to him, her eyes searching his. “Jimmy... do you believe in fate?”
He took her hands in his, warming them. “I never did... until I met you.”
Rebecca’s heart raced. “I was so lonely that night... I almost didn’t go to the square. But something told me to. And then... I found you.”
Jimmy’s eyes softened. “I felt the same. Like... we were meant to meet.”
They stood there, the world around them fading away. Jimmy took a step closer, his face inches from hers. “I wished for someone who understands me. And then... you came along.”
Tears filled Rebecca’s eyes. “I wished for someone who sees me... really sees me. And here you are.”
Jimmy cupped her face, his thumb brushing her cheek. “I see you, Rebecca. And I never want to look away.”
Her breath hitched, her heart pounding. “Jimmy...”
He leaned in, his lips brushing hers softly, tenderly. The world seemed to stop, time standing still as their hearts danced together. When they pulled apart, they were both breathless, their eyes locked.
“I don’t know how it happened,” Jimmy whispered, his forehead resting against hers, “but I’m glad it did.”
Rebecca smiled, her fingers tightening around his. “Me too.”
They stayed there, wrapped in each other’s warmth, watching the stars blink to life above them. It was magical, like a dream they never wanted to wake from.
As the night grew colder, Jimmy held her close. “Promise me... we’ll make a wish together every New Year’s Eve.”
Rebecca’s heart swelled. “I promise.”
They looked up at the sky, a shooting star streaking across the night. They closed their eyes and made another wish – a wish for forever.
And as their fingers intertwined, they knew their hearts were tied by a midnight wish that would never fade.
